IVANOVIC BELIEVES CHELSEA’S NKUNKU DEAL IS A GOOD MOVE

Although there haven’t been any official announcements to backup the claim, various reports have been making the rounds that Chelsea have reportedly agreed a deal with German Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig for the transfer of French attacker Christopher Nkunku, with the deal reported to be on the brink of being made official as early as the January winter transfer window. Nkunku is no doubt one of the best players at Leipzig and there have been multiple reports of how teams have been showing interest tin him for some time now.

Aside from Chelsea, it was reported that Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, as well as Barcelona were eheuing a potential move for the player but it is currently looking like the Blues have stolen a March ahead of their rivals in making a deal possible for the player. Even when Thomas Tuchel was still Chelsea manager, it was reported that the German ma aver was interested in bringing Nkunku to Stamford  Bridge and it looks like Graham Potter also sees the qualities of the player just like Tuchel did before he got fired by the club’s owners some months ago.

If the deal goes through, it is expected to be a masterclass of a transfer for the  lies as they have lacked some firepower upfront so far this season, causing them to miss a couple of big chances, as well as costing them crucial points as well. Nkunku is said to be excited about the prospect of moving to England and playing in the Premier League, and has also been touted to flourish at Stamford Bridge. Former Chelsea player Branislav Ivanovic has revealed that signing the attacker would be a good statement of intent from the club and that they should wrap up the deal as soon as possible to fend off interest from other clubs.

WILL RONALDO’S GOALLESS RUN CONTINUE?

Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has embarked on another goalless run ahead of the Premier League clash with Watford this weekend. The five-time Ballon d’Or recipient is presently on a two-game goal drought and failure to find the back of the net against the Hornets on Saturday evening will take his goal drought to three games.

Cristiano Ronaldo was on a six-game goalless run before he put an end to the run by giving Manchester United the lead during the 2-0 home victory over Brighton and Hove Albion earlier this month. It was his longest goal drought for over a decade dating back to the start of his Real Madrid career.

Ronaldo is the leading goalscorer at Manchester United this season with 15 goals in all competitions. He has nine goals in the Premier League and six goals in the Champions League. The Portuguese international skipper is in the first season of his second Manchester United spell having returned to the club last summer. He signed a two-year deal with the option of another year after he joined the Red Devils from Italian team Juventus.

Cristiano Ronaldo and his Manchester United teammates are in a keenly contested battle to finish in the Champions League places and the team can’t afford to let their star player go on goalless runs. Manchester United didn’t record a win in three games when Ronaldo went on his last goalless run.

He has not scored in the last two games against Leeds United and Atletico Madrid in all competitions. During the 4-2 away win over Leeds United in the league, he was denied from close range by Ilhan Meslier in the Leeds goal during the first half and the miss didn’t haunt him after his team won the game eventually. He was also not on the scoresheet as hosts Atletico Madrid and Manchester United played out a 1-1 draw at the new Wanda Metropolitano Stadium on Wednesday in the first leg of their last 16 tie in the Champions League.

The question of whether or not the latest goalless run embarked upon by Ronaldo will go on will be answered after the Watford game in the league this weekend.

SUAREZ WARY OF UNITED THREAT

Uruguayan international Luis Suarez is aware of the threat posed by Manchester United ahead of the Champions League first knockout stage tie with Atletico Madrid. Atletico striker Luis Suarez talked about the Champions League draw in a chat with AS Diario as he warned his teammates about the threat that Manchester United would pose when the two teams meet in February and March 2022.

Luis Suarez said that he watched the second Champions League draw for the round of 16 fixtures. He added that you have to beat the best to win the Champions League and United are one of the best. The Uruguayan striker said that Atletico Madrid will go into the knockout stage in the best way possible.

The Champions League round of 16 draw had to be done again after they encountereda technical problem. Luis Suarez watched the draw the second time as his Atletico Madrid side and Manchester United were drawn together.Suarez has faced Manchester United in the colours of two teams namely Barcelona and Liverpool. He has a record of four wins, four draws and one defeat in nine appearances.

The first knockout stage tie between Manchester United and Atletico Madrid is one of the best on paper alongside the first knockout stage tie between French giants Paris Saint Germain (PSG) and Real Madrid. The knockout stage tie between Liverpool and Inter Milan is also an interesting one.

One of the most interesting part of the two draws was holders Chelsea getting the same team in each draw. Chelsea were drawn with French champions Lille in the first and second draw. German champions Bayern Munich and Austrian champions Red Bull Salzburg were also drawn together. Ajax and Benfica are one of the three remaining first knockout stage ties. The other two knockout stage ties are Manchester City v Sporting Lisbon and Juventus v Villarreal.
